El De phisicis ligaturis de Costa Ben Luca : un tratado poco conocido sobre el uso de encantamientos y amuletos con fines terapéuticos

Abstract

El De phisicis ligaturis o Epistola de incantatione es un tratado mágico-médico muy poco conocido que considera la eficacia de los amuletos, los encantamientos y otros dispositivos mágicos para combatir problemas de salud o prevenir enfermedades. Fue escrito en árabe por Costa ben Luca (aprox. 820- aprox. 912), pero su versión original está perdida. Sin embargo, sobrevive en una traducción muy probablemente realizada por Constantino el Africano en Monte Casino entre los años 1077 y 1087. Este trabajo analiza los aspectos principales del tratado (biografías tanto del autor como del traductor, estructura y contenidos de la epístola, fuentes médico-filosóficas, manuscritos que sobreviven, fortuna del texto hasta el Renacimiento, etc.). y ofrece como suplemento una edición crítica que incluye notas principalmente dirigidas a identificar las fuentes griegas del texto, centralmente, aquellas de Dioscórides y Galeno. La epístola también arroja luz acerca de la relación compleja entre la medicina india y griega en el contexto arábico del siglo IX D.C.

The De phisicis ligaturis or Epistola de incantatione is a very little known magical- medical treatise that considers the efficacy of amulets, enchantments and other magical devices in combating ill health or in preventing illnesses. It was written in Arabic by Costa ben Luca (ca. 820-ca. 912), but its original version is missed. It survives, however, in a translation quite probably made by Constantine the African in Monte Cassino between 1077 and 1087. This paper analyses principal aspects of the treatise (biographies of both author and translator, structure and contents of the epistle, medical-philosophical sources, manuscripts that survive, fortune of the text up to the Renaissance, etc.) and offers as a supplement a critical edition, including notes mainly devoted to the identification of the Greek sources of the text, namely Dioscorides and Galen. The epistle al.so sheds light on the complex relationship between Indian and Greek Medicine in the Arabic context of the 9th century A. D.
